Government shutdown hits NASA

1 Oct

This isn’t a political debate. It’s simply a bunch of adults behaving like four-year-olds who don’t care what the implications of their actions are.

And of course it hits all government services – including NASA – who has connections and responsibilities far beyond American borders.

To that end, I tweeted this today:

And of course my friend and York Universe colleague Jesse came up with the most apt response possible:

There is a serious problem in the US…and it’s not Obamacare, it’s not the economy, it’s not debt ceilings (though those are all significant issues). The most serious problem facing American politics today is indeed the American Politicians themselves. They are far more concerned with optics and grandstanding than they are with delivering any sort of results for the people they supposedly represent.

Wake up America. Turf ’em.

On Marriage

10 May

This will be quick, but it needs to be said.

So much has been said about the decision by the lovely, if not misguided, folks in North Carolina regarding gay marriage.

First, I must tell you that I am a straight Conservative. I’m not a gay hippie running around telling everyone to smoke hemp, legalize pot, and install safe-injection sites at every street corner. So let’s leave all those arguments at the door.

Next, it is very important to understand what Conservatism means to me: small government.

I firmly believe that people should be able to live their lives on a daily basis without interference from the government. And it’s not that I feel government is inherently evil; indeed it is quite necessary and fills an important role in our society. But, you should be able to live and run your own life without outside interference.

And this belief is generally centered about economic issues for me — low taxes, few/no barriers to trade, open markets, encourage growth, flat tax rates, etc.

However, I would certainly extend my repulsion to interference and having the government (or others) tell me how to run my life to marriage.

I mean, how presumptuous can you get?

To presume to tell me – or anyone else – who they can love. Who they can be loved by. And, who they can marry. Because, somehow, someone being in love and being married threatens your way of life?

How dare you.

I say it is you, North Carolinians, who threaten our way of life. A way of life based on freedom and equality for all. Life based on openness and opportunity.

And so I will end on this, as one of your founding fathers said it very eloquently:

“Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.”Abraham Lincoln
